But in the end, wisdom trumped emotion. The 68-year-old Umno president knew that what he was doing was best for the party. He did what a responsible leader should do, giving up the party leadership (and in effect the prime ministership also) in March after five years in power, paving the way for his deputy Datuk Seri Najib Razak to take over.
