House prices increased by 1.6 per cent in August compared with July - the strongest monthly rise since September 2004 - said Halifax, citing greater market activity. The annual inflation rate of 2.5 per cent illustrated the sharp slow-down since this time last year when it stood at 21.3 per cent.
